Carmel Marathon Training: Week 12

Overall the first taper week went well. I had some solid workouts which gave me a boost of confidence for Carmel and also had some set backs which brought be back down to earth.

One of the main highlights of the week was finally deciding on my marathon shoes. This had caused me a great deal of grief over the past few weeks but after a lengthy bitch session to Kim, (muchos thanks BTW for listening to me being a head case) I took my fresh out of the box Newtons for an 8 mile run and it was pure bliss. I don't know why I didn't wear them sooner- probably since the memory of the old ones giving me blisters was still fresh in my mind- but DUH they were old and beyond their prime! I seriously don't know why I tried to change the shoes I've worn for multiple marathons. Derp.

Shamrock Shuffle also went really well- more on that in another post.

The main lowlight of the week was getting food poisoning Sunday evening post shamrock. (I have really bad luck within 2 weeks of a marathon).

Workouts:

Monday: REST

Tuesday: 8 mile run

Wednesday: 10 cycle

Thursday: 7 cycle, 2 run

Friday: REST

Saturday: 7 mile run, 2.82 mile run (MRC)

Sunday: 4.97 mile run (Shamrock Shuffle)

Total: 4:37:24 for 41.79 miles

3:18:34 for 24.79 miles running

1:18:50 for 17 miles cycling

I had planned on another mid distance run before Saturday's run and now I don't remember why I took the unplanned rest day. Oh well.

Snapshots:

The 8 mile run on Tuesday was amazing. Fresh kicks, gorgeous lakefront, nice weather- what more could I want? I wanted a few GMP miles and settled on a few GMP and 3 tempo 7:3x miles. I felt so freaking good. It was probably the best run I've had all year- or at least top 3.

Thursday we took CB to the vet for his comprehensive exam/vaccinations. He enjoyed riding in the car. I just got a call from the vet saying the biopsy on a lump in his leg came back benign. Yay!

Saturday was our Mikkeller Running club run. As always, we had a ton of fun. Surprisingly despite the whacky weather, we ran during a nice pocket of sunshine further cementing that our club only meets on near *perfect* weather days.

The weather was so strange on Saturday. Full on whiteout conditions for 5 min, followed by 20 minutes of sunshine. Go home Chicago weather, you're drunk!

Of course, run club wouldn't be complete without beer and some shots. I love Fireball too much. We're a fun crowd.

Looking Forward:

I need to get a few more solid workouts in this week- mainly a speed sesh and 2 middle distance runs with some GMP thrown in.

Continue to eat well.

  1. So glad to hear about CB's results! Yay!! Also, nice 8 miler. Looks like you were flyin'! Have fun with your speed sesh and other runs this week. I am chilling big time right now with short runs, but I still feel sharp. Hope to keep that going for 10 more days. Funny how Mikkeller only ever meets for nice weather days. I remember last year it was about 50 degrees and sunny for a February run!

    1. Thank you! I was surprised at the turnaround of the test results. I was told 2-3 weeks. Im so relieved that he is ok. The short runs with some pickups to stay sharp and springy are my jam this week too. We will be ready to flyyyyy next week in Carmel!

  2. Ugh, food poisoning is seriously the worst. I've had it 3 or 4 times in the last 5 years, and it's just awful. I hope you're feeling better! Keep hydrating (and drink stuff like Ensure if you feel really drained - that's my recovery tip) and hopefully you'll be back out there soon!

It was so, so good to see you Saturday! I'm glad I avoided those Fireball shots though ;)

    1. Oh man that's rough! If I could have gotten my hands on ensure or pedialyte I would have. (Probs so much better than the Gatorade I got) I'm feeling almost 80% today so I'm hoping this crap is beyond me at this point.

It was soooo nice to see you and run with you on Saturday! But.. Fireball shots are sooooo good. ;)

  3. Hoping you are recovering quickly from the food poisoning! Glad you were able to get your shoes figured out for the marathon. Hurray for the feeling of blissful comfort when taking new shoes out for an inaugural run - and yay for your awesome 8-miler on Tuesday!!!

Is it not a coincidence that MRC always has perfect or near-perfect weather, given I have recurring commitments that prevent me from attending? ;-P

    1. Thank you! Feeling soooo much better today. Yesterday was so rough. I definitely feel more excited about the marathon now that I'm settled on shoes... Now onto what to wear...

Buahahahaha maybe you have something to do with our perfect weather. Although Shamrock weather was cold, it could have been a lot worse (like Saturday!!) :)
