August 215

•Was my highest mileage month ever, with 215 miles run.

•I had several bad long runs.

•I ran several of my long runs on Friday evenings.

•Running the long runs on a Friday evening is infinitely better than a Saturday morning in my opinion. (then my weekends aren't taken over by long runs)

•I now have an ankle injury which I am losing sleep over which I sustained on my last long run.

•2 weeks pre goal race is the optimal time for me to get injured. (hip flexor 2 weeks before Miami marathon, now this ankle sh*t)

•My body hates me.

•The ankle issue came out of no where during my last long run. Just an increasing gradual pain up my leg which eventually caused me to abandon the last few miles. At the time, i thought it was coming from my foot. Wasn't until after the run I found the source of pain (about an inch above my outer ankle bone. Feels like a bad bruise when poked at)

•There is no swelling and generally while walking this issue is a non issue. I didn't roll my ankle or anything else i can remember out of the ordinary happening during the run.

•I am aggressively icing and compressing my ankle to give it the best shot for a 100% start come next Sunday.

•I've broken down into tears at least 3 times now because of this.

•I seriously don't know what else to do to speed along the healing process. I plan on cycling and not running until its no longer painful to touch. Not sure if KT tape will help it either.

•I can't give this anymore thought or I might cry again.

•I'm done.

  1. Sorry to hear about your injury. That stinks for sure, but try and not give up hope. I was injured pretty badly leading up to the NYC marathon last year (tore something in my shin). I simply took off from all exercise in the 10 days leading up to the race. I was able to run/walk the first 23 miles and then carefully walked the last 3.2, got my medal and took the next few weeks off from running! Yes, my final time was slower than my goal time, but I still had an AWESOME time enjoying the crowds and the race itself! I know it would be very disappointing to miss your goal race, but it looks like you could skip Fox Valley and try to heal in time for Chicago. Your fitness gained over the last few months won't fade for awhile even if you rest. After a week and a half of rest, reassess your situation and then decide at that point what you should do.

    1. Thank you! I'm really hoping this thing disappears over the next few days. I'm definitely going to lay off running until its better because my 6 miler yesterday aggravated it. And you're right- I won't be losing too much fitness over the next 2 weeks if I take it easy. Chicago is a "fun" run this year where I get to accompany my boyfriend for the 26.2 and be his support. My reason for fox valley was to BQ for the 2013 Boston marathon. If I don't do it next weekend, I've got all next year to qualify for 2014.

    2. Yes, the ankle issue might disappear if you rest for a few days. When it does heal, you will run the marathon with "fresh legs". Anyway, fingers crossed that your healed ankle will allow you to run at your goal pace, and then I will see you at the starting line in April in Boston! :-)

  2. You could rest the next two weeks, and still DESTROY your race. This is mental from here on out. You are a very tough girl - keep reminding yourself that!!

  3. I'm so sorry to hear about your ankle issue! Our bodies are capable of some amazing things, so don't hold your breath, missy! Your training has been incredibly strong and I know that you're going to accomplish your goal. Deep breaths and take it one day at a time. Go treat yourself this week and get your mind off of things!

  4. First, congrats on the highest mileage month, that is awesome.

I really hope your injury is not a stress reaction/fracture. Because those symptoms you describe are almost exactly what a stress fracture feels like - since I had one earlier this year. It feels like a dull pain sometimes in the spot that hurts more with more activity or running. It can almost feel like sharp pains going through your legs that is uncomfortable.

Did you sprain your ankle or having any other sort of ankle trauma that might cause this? Hopefully it is just a bruise that happened somehow. That is good that you feel no pain while walking. Though I'd recommend getting it checked out by a sports doc so they can say for sure.

    1. Thank you! I don't remember anything out of the ordinary happening on the run. I felt good for a while and then the pain just gradually started getting worse. My first thought was stress fracture of fibula. But I don't exhibit a lot of the symptoms of stress fractures. It's pretty much painless while walking. I dunno. :( but, being I was out on the lakefront, I could have rolled it slightly on the uneven surface and not realized it. It feels much better today. Thank god!

  5. I agree with Gingerfoxxx! One of my best races was after a forced week off due to ankle issues. I've had quite a few this year and I just had to wrap and rest. I really hope it goes away soon and is some sort of ghost injury! :(

Congrats on the awesome high mileage! And I agree about getting long runs in early. I do that whenever I can, so that I still do have an actual weekend!

    1. I'm also
Hoping it's a ghost injury. I also might be excessively paranoid about it since its less than 10 days until the race. At least I can look on the bright side and know I'll be well rested for next Sunday :)

  6. Amazing mileage! Great job.

Ugh on the ankle, I have had two months of nothing, but injuries so I am feeling your frustration right now. Rest your ankle, you have the training in and nothing and throw that off now.

  7. Congratulations on 215 miles run in August, that is AMAZING!

I am SO sorry to hear about the ankle issue. That is the most frustrating thing ever, especially since your training had been going fairly smoothly up until this point. Definitely try to go in to see a PT or doctor as soon as you can. I was nursing some knee pain last year before the Chicago Spring Half, and I was ridden with anxiety. I saw a PT who cleared me to run as long as I didn't push through too much pain. But more importantly, just getting the PT's clearance made a huge difference for me, mentally. And sometimes that mental boost is all that it takes to give it one last push (with clearance, of course).

In any event, I agree with what the others are saying - rest and ice your ankle as much as you can. Your training is going to stay with you even if you take a little bit of extra time off these last few weeks - and the time off will just boost you even more in all ways. You WILL qualify for Boston, no matter what. It's just a question of when, and you are being very smart about proceding cautiously. I am sending you healing vibes!!!!!

    1. I love your encouragement! I plan to Ice and rest a bunch more than planned so hopefully I'll be good for next Sunday. I guess I'm the odd one out- because I have no desire to go see a PT or doctor about this. I don't want to hear anything but "go run" and I feel without an MRI or Bone scan, nothing would be conclusive- even with those I'm not 100% convinced. There is a good chance I'm obesessing too much over this issue too- its too close to have an issue so I'm freaking out more than I should. Ugh. It actually feels much better today after taking yesterday off. But then again, walking doesn't seem to bother it at all. I'm hoping after another rest day this thing will be gone and I can run a good race next week without this crap! :)

  9. It's now Sunday and I hope your ankle is well enough to carry you through. Good luck! And may your tears be those of joy now.

  10. Oh wait ... now I'm think next Sunday was actually in two Sundays. I've got my weekend races mixed up. Anyway, rest remains a priority over running right now. The fitness will remain.

  11. I hope your ankle is feeling fine now! I'll be there doing 20 with my sister, but if everything goes as you hope, you'll be done long before we will! GOOD LUCK!
