What to wear?

This Saturday is the Get Lucky half marathon. For me, it's the culmination of 6 weeks of consistent training, and also the spring board for a possible Spring Full...

As of today, the forecast is looking a little on the chilly side- "feels like" 26!?! I'm really hoping the forecast improves over the next few days- read: warmer, less wind.

The dilemma I'm facing is what the heck to wear!?!

Do I go with a tank top, arm warmers, and shorts?

Or do I go with a long sleeve tech shirt and shorts?

I'll also wear gloves and my owl head hat.

I'm really stuck. I hate being too hot while running (with a jacket), but I also HATE being too cold pre race. If it was shorter than a half marathon, i'd wear a jacket for sure. Maybe I'll just have to suck it up (HTFU) for this one.

also worth mentioning, if you're running or spectating this race, we will have a meet up by the bag check at 8:15

What would you wear for these conditions?

  1. I'm with you on trying to figure out what to wear. Unfortunately, I don't have an owl head hat, but I'll somehow make do! I may not wear shorts with the 17 mph wind. I wish there was an "S" for the wind direction and not a "N". Maybe they can change the course so we go North first and have a tailwind for the last 6.5?! :-) I'm picking up my packet today. Thanks for the info on the meetup.

    1. I'm not so sure on the owl head hats aerodynamics. :)

Yes! I wish the headwind was for the first half.. Story of our life on the lakefront!

Can't wait to meet you Saturday

  2. I'd go long sleeves/shorts and buy some crappy zip up jacket you can toss off after you warm up. If you have an old jacket or sweatshirt you wouldn't mind parting with, all the better! I too hate standing around freezing death, it feels like every muscle in my body tightens up. Good luck on the race!

    1. That's a great idea! I might wear the jacket because the headwind will be on the last 6 miles... Ugh.

      Thank you :)

  3. I don't own arm warmers so I'd go with option 2 push the sleeves up if I started to get too warm :)

  4. I love my arm warmers so I'd say go with a tank and arm warmers. If you're worried about being too cold pre-race, why not wear an old sweatshirt or long-sleeved that you can toss at the start? With the cold temps, it could be worth it.

I did the Get Lucky half last year and was disappointed. It was really hot that day (during that 80 degree stretch in March) and I didn't feel like the race folks were properly prepared. And it was downright dangerous on the bike path as the bikes were still flying by with little-to-no regard for runners running a race. I was glad I brought my handheld because we filled it up at water stations and shared (I ran the race with Sara aka Gingerfoxxx). I'm interested to hear how they handle much different conditions! Looking forward to your recap.

Best of luck! I'm sure you will ROCK IT OUT!! :)

    1. YIKES! I didnt realize how bad this race was last year. Im hoping with the much cooler weather that the cyclists stay indoors on their trainers :) I really hope things are better this year.

  5. I love those drawings. Please tell me you did them! They rock!

Option #1 for me. Only I might spring for capris or bermudas. But arm warmers should be enough... I hope!!!!

    So wish I could spectate!!!

  6. Me personally, I'd be wearing long sleeves and PANTS. Especially with the wind.

I think, if you hate being cold, go with long sleeves.

  7. I have a 5K that day, and am too at a loss. Dress for warmth, it's gonna be cold!

  8. Thats a toughy. I would probably wear the long sleeve, but then regret it halfway through. Did you see the new nike shirts that are basically a tank with a "sleeve capelet"? I feel like they thought of me when they designed it. how are you with sun and wind? Either way, good luck! (not that you need it, speedy mcspeedster!)

  9. I would wear shorts or spandex capris with a thin tech shirt and arm warmers underneath. If that helps. :-)

    1. Thats a great idea- arm warmers+ longsleeve. I might do that now. :)

  10. Wow, your weather threshhold for wearing shorts is much different than mine! I like to feel cozy-warm when I run so only wear shorts if the temp is in the 50s or higher. For this weekend, personally, I would wear tights, a long-sleeve shirt, and a jacket. For you, I would definitely vote for a throw-away sweatshirt because I hate being cold pre-race, also.

I echo Kelly's thoughts on the Get Lucky from last year! It wasn't the most organized event - so here is hoping that it is much better this year (and the weather is already going to be MUCH better). Can't wait to hear how it goes!!!!!!!! You are going to ROCK it!!!

    1. hehe, I think I'll be cold actually :) I think i might wear a thin jacket now because of the wind. I hope the cyclists stay on their trainers!

  11. I think we had similar weather at Fort2Base and I wore a long sleeve and capris and felt fine.
